The creators of Dead Island are trying for a moving, story-driven zombie-killing experience, something that’s fairly foreign to the zombie-gaming genre and clearly inspired by the success of AMC’s The Walking Dead. As I’ve mentioned before, games now need two trailers, a gameplay trailer and a story trailer—and this is the story reveal. Even through this bucks the recent trend of using live action for the announcement trailer, it’s one of the best I’ve seen since Halo 3: ODST. Long but worth it, the trailer follows a zombie invasion in reverse to before the outbreak occurred, when our presumed protagonists were still a happy family. However, its sudden success is driving people to a Web site that’s basically a placeholder. I guess we’re in for another year of slow reveals. Why can’t they create these games faster?
